ICC World Cup Cricket Match 2007

Bangladesh vs South Africa

Super 8, Match 10, SA vs BAN: Bangladesh beat South Africa by 67 runs

South Africa Cricket team Bangladesh Cricket team Bangladesh outplayed the mighty South Africa and notched up their third victory of the World Cup, and their first of the Super Eight stage at Guyana on Saturday.
Set 252 for victory, the Worlds top-ranked side caved in quite inexplicably and lost the match by 67 runs as Bangladesh, after beating India earlier in the group-opener, once again lived up to their reputation of being the giant killers. Bangladesh recorded their first win against South Africa as they managed to skittle their famed rivals for 184 in 48.3 overs.

Reported Earlier: Bangladesh surprised the Africans with a late fight back led by youngster M Ashraful who literary toyed around with an experienced South African bowling line up as he scored a brilliant 87 from just 83 balls. He was finally dismissed by Nel who led the African attack with a 5 wicket haul.
Bangladesh scored an inspiring 251 to take the challenge to the opposition camp.Earlier, after M Rahim was run out by Kemp, Bangladesh were struggling to reach a defendable total before Asraful and Mortaza started turning things around. After a brilliant spell of fast bowling by Andre Nel and Pollock, Bangladesh survived the middle over scare thanks to a spirited fight back by M Ashraful and Aftab Ahmed

Reported Earlier: South African captain Graeme Smith won the toss in their crucial World Cup Super Eights match in Georgetown.Smith elected to field against an unpredictable Bangladeshi team.
Bangladesh were at their most confident in their five-wicket win over India in a Group B match in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad on March 17. That shock reverse led to the 1983 champions` first-round elimination.

South Africa team: Graeme Smith (captain), A.B. de Villiers, Jacques Kallis, Herschelle Gibbs, Ashwell Prince, Justin Kemp, Mark Boucher, Shaun Pollock, Andre Nel, Charl Langeveldt, Makhaya Ntini
Bangladesh team: Javed Omar, Tamim Iqbal, Habibul Bashar (captain), Aftab Ahmed, Saqibul Hasan, Mohammad Ashraful, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mohammad Rafique, Mashrafee Mortaza, Abdur Razzak, Syed Rasel.
World Cup Super 8, Match 10, Guyana: Bangladesh 251-8 (50.0 overs) beat South Africa 184-10 (48.4 overs) by 67 runs

Super 8, Match 10, SA vs BAN: Young and confident Bangladesh worry Smith

South Africa Cricket team Bangladesh Cricket team Bangladesh`s youthful confidence has given South African captain Graeme Smith cause for concern ahead of their World Cup Super Eights match in Georgetown on Saturday.
"If you give them a chance they will pounce on it," Smith told a news conference on Friday. "You`ve got to start well against them and put them on the back foot as early as you can. "If you give them a sniff they`ve got players who have, under (coach) Dav Whatmore, learnt how to win games. "They`re young, and they don`t think about the situations that they`re in. They play with that sort of freedom."
Bangladesh were at their most confident in their five-wicket win over India in a Group B match in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad on March 17. That shock reverse led to the 1983 champions` first-round elimination. Since then they have lost momentum and they were beaten by 10 wickets and nine wickets by Australia and New Zealand respectively in their last two matches. Bangladesh captain Habibul Bashar hoped his men would bounce back against the South Africans, who like Australia and New Zealand, are also among the favourites to win the tournament.

2007 Tournament Format

The 2007 Cricket World Cup was hosted by the West Indies from March 11 to April 28, 2007. It was contested by 16 nations.

The ten Test Match-playing countries qualified for the World Cup automatically, along with Kenya, which had ODI status and five further teams qualified via the 2005 ICC Trophy. The field of sixteen teams was the largest ever for the Cricket World Cup.

The teams were divided into 4 groups, with each group playing its matches at one ground. The top two teams from each group competed in a Super 8 format, similar to the previous "Super 6" format, from which the semi-finalists were decided. Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and South Africa won through to the semi-finals, with Australia defeating Sri Lanka in the final to win their third consecutive World Cup.
There were 51 matches overall, spread over eight venues across the West Indies, which were selected to host the World Cup final tournament.

Herschelle Gibbs hit six sixes in one Daan van Bunge over for South Africa against the Netherlands, becoming the first player to achieve the feat in ODI cricket. Australia became the first team to win 3 consecutive World Cups.

Cricket World Cup Quotes..

I fully expect us to win every game we play, it doesn't matter what the make-up of the team is.
Ricky Ponting, Australian skipper.

Is this a resignation issue? I'll have to talk with my superiors on that.
former New Zealand captain and Match referee Jeff Crowe on the blunder by him and the umpires which caused the farcical scenes at the end of the World Cup final.

I guess it was nice to finish off with a catch behind with Gilly.
McGrath on Gilchrist catching Arnold to give him his last ODI wicket. He is the tournament's leading wicket-taker with a record haul of 25 wickets and the most successful World Cup bowler of all-time.

It was really pleasing to do it on an important day. I've been getting a lot of starts but hadn't converted.
Adam Gilchrist who smashed a final record 149 off 104 balls to set up the victory.

It was simply a brilliant innings from Gilchrist, unfortunately I was the opposition captain watching it.
Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene about Adam Gilchrist's 149 off just 104 balls.

My learned commentary is, my commentary is congratulations to Ricky and the boys, but to Glenn McGrath, that lanky bloke from Narromine, thanks for a wonderful contribution to Australian cricket.
Prime Minister "cricket tragic" John Howard.

We listen to criticism, and there has been a lot of it from people saying it's been too long - so we'll look to make it shorter.
ICC chief executive Malcolm Speed.
