Kenya Cricket Team Profile
The Kenya Cricket Team is the official cricket team of Kenya. The Kenyan cricket team plays many world-class players but the financial crisis and poor management has affected it in a big way. Kenya surprised the cricketing world by qualifying for the semi-finals in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2003 in South Africa. The Kenyan cricket team has produced many outstanding cricketers, such as the all-rounder Steve Tikolo, Thomas Odoyo, David Obuya and Martin Suji. The Kenyan Cricket Team has got the potential to upset any team in the world.
Once the part of erstwhile East African team, Kenya became an Associate Member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) in their individual right in 1981. Since then Kenya has participated in 5 ICC Trophy tournaments untill 1997, and were runners-up in 1994 and 1997 ICC Trophy tournaments. They were awarded ODI status by ICC soon after the 1996 World Cup, when they defeated high-ranking West Indies team by 73 runs in one of the group matches. During the ICC Cricket World Cup 2003, Kenya surprised the cricket fans world over by defeating three Test-playing nations on their way to the semi-finals.
Kenya is placed in Group C in the ICC World Cup 2007 groupings, along with England, New Zealand and Canada. The team will start its world cup campaign against Canada on March 14, 2007 in Saint Lucia.
