New Zealand vs Sri Lanka Warm UP Match
NZ vs SL Warm-Up: Sri Lanka lose to New Zealand by 18 runs
Mar 09, 2007
A century (106) from opener Upul Tharanga went in vain as Sri Lanka lost by 18 runs to New Zealand in their final warm up match of the World Cup at Barbados.
Tharanga, who hit 10 fours and two sixes during his 112-ball stay, was the pillar of the Lankan innings as he set the tone with his fluent batting, after New Zealand had set a victory target of 286. His departure in the 35th over could have turned the balance in New Zealands favour, although Sri Lanka still needed 106 from 90 balls. Allrounder Jacob Oram took Tharangas wicket as Sri Lanka were finally bowled out with 10 balls unsused. The Sri Lankan top order barring Tharanga didnt contribute much. Opener Marvan Atapattu fell to Shane Bond for 24 while captain Mahela Jayawardene, who mad just 2, and wicketkeeper Kumara Sangakkara(13), both fell to Scott Styris.
Chamara Silva made 40 but fell when set. The tail failed to wag as Russell Arnold, who seemed like finishing off the match remained stranded on 32 not out, as wickets tumbled around him. The victory brought relief to the Kiwis camp, who were truly shaken by the Bangladesh loss in their previous game. Earlier, New Zealand made 285 for 8 with their top order comprising Lou Vincent (70),Stephen Flmeing (65) and Peter Fulton (59) contributing handsomely.
Pre-Match Report: The New Zealand cricketers play their final warm up game for the world cup today when they play Sri Lanka the team coach John Bracewell feels is the best equipped to cope in the Carribean conditions.
After losing to Banglandesh in their first warm up match, on a sticky Bridgetown pitch, Bracewell wants to see a much improved effort from the top order batsmen and the bowlers in the opening overs. He says Sri Lanka are probably one of the favourites as their flexibility gives them the best tools available and the Black Caps need to adapt to that very quickly.
